PROJECT BODY BEAUTIFUL CONTEST
I'd like to get started on Sunday, February 15th and have it run for 12 weeks.
The Rules (to be changed before the contest starts if we choose)
1You contribute $25. The winner takes the pot.
2POINT CALCULATION:
You get 1 point (maximum of 4 points a day) for every day that you:
a. Have a good eating day (you lose points if you have a bad day). You can define what this is for yourself. It needs to be measurable and be a challenge for you. Although this is a personal thing, I think we need a base rule:
1 point = good eating day = no treats (I read recently that if you eat treats every day they are not treats, they are habits.)
0 points = okay eating day = 1 treat small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
-1 points = BAD EATING DAY = More than that 1 treat that will fit in the palm of your hand
In review, you get 1 point for a good eating day, 0 points for an okay day, and -1 if you have a BAD DAY. Also, a treat is not just cookies and candy, it's also chips, fries, sugary soda, buttery garlic bread, and anything you just know is not good for you.
ONE FREE TREAT A WEEK - small enough to fit in the palm of your hand
b. Exercise for at least 30 minutes (on Sundays you can get a free point)
c. Sleep 7 hours per night
d. Keep your personal goal.
Again, I think this should be measurable and declared to all participants as a way to motivate each other and keep track of each other. These goals could change from week to week, but I think a weekly goal would be good: drink 6 glasses of water a day, run 2 miles a day, etc.
3.You get 1 bonus point per week for posting your point total on the blog by Monday at 5 pm.
4.You are honest with your competitors. At the end of twelve weeks, the person with the most points wins.

Let me know if you want to join and I will send you an email to invite you to the private blog. This should be fun!

I'd like to do the contest. I will bring the 25.00 on Monday. I couldn't find your e-mail, so hope you get this in time for Sunday. I will call Angela and see if she is interested if that's O.K.

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
