Primary Program

We had our primary program today. The kids did a great job. Here were there parts:

Scotty: My favorite scripture story is about
the wars with the Nephites and the Lamanites.
Brian: When I am tempted to do Karate on someone, the Holy Ghost tells me not to. (He got quite a few laughs. I don't think he knew why - I just told him it was because he was SO CUTE).
Anna: I serve at home by helping my mom take care of my little sister, Emily and my little brother, Scotty. I also help my little brother, Scotty read and write.

I led the music and the children sang beautifully (most of the time). They love the song, "Called to Serve" and they always sing it at the top of their ability. It's rather cute though. We had a 9-year old boy and a 6-year old girl sing solos for "If the Savior Stood Beside Me." They did an excellent job. The boys all sang so well and outsang the girls especially on "Love is Spoken Here." I was told before Sacrament Meeting that I was going to be released, but the bishop decided they needed to wait until next week because it wouldn't be right to release me just before I led the children. I was glad. I will really miss the kids. I love being in Primary and feeling of the children's spirit each week. I love to see their excitement about the gospel and their happy smiling faces. I will miss their hugs and kind words also.

We had our program on the 15th (i think) and we got told yesterday that we are going to be released next sunday! I'm way sad but Cy teaches GD so I will get to go to his lessons now! I'm not quite sure how i'm going to handle sitting during those last two hours! It will be an adjustment!

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
