Maren's Gymnastics Season

Maren just finished up her first Level 8 gymnastics season. She had a great season and lots of fun. She just had her State meet on the 20th. She got 3rd place All Around in her age division! She ALMOST got 1st place on beam, but near the end of the meet, another girl beat her by just 0.025. She qualified for Regionals in Washington on April 11th. Since the meet is on a Sunday, she won't be attending the meet. She's just excited to be done with competition now and is grateful that State wasn't on Sunday also.

Maren's planning on doing another season of Level 8 next year and then hopefully continue through High School and compete in college. She and her best friend, Tiffanie are going to gymnastics camp this summer at BYU. They are very excited!

She started the season off a little shaky at her Jump Start meet, but quickly pulled it around. She was doing great and then injured her ankle. DONUTS! She had to be on crutches for a few days (which she wasn't too happy about) and then slowly moved back into practice. She wasn't able to attend her California meet, which she was very sad about. When she went to the Anne Patterson Classic in Roseburg, it was the first time she had done a complete floor routine since her injury - and she did GREAT!

One of Maren's highlights was being able to compete with her friend, Tiffanie. Tiffanie does gymnastics at another gym in Medford. She is also a Level 8. They get to hang out at school and whenever they get a chance away from their gymnastics' schedule. The gymnastics gives them lots to talk about - although, they are very much alike anyway. They have even been asked if they are twins. Luckily, Maren and Tiffanie got to be in three meets together and got to be in the same rotation at State. Although, probably the most entertaining part was after State at Olive Garden! I'll post pictures later.

Here are Maren's results from the season:

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
