I'm hoping to be back!

Our family in a nutshell (I'm hoping to get pictures in later):
Jonny: CROSS COUNTRY - Stanford Invitational, 5K, Personal Record: 18:15
Maren: GYMNASTICS - Tsuks on vault and Straddle Backs on bars
Anna: VOLLEYBALL - Middle school 7th Grade JV Team, 3 service points on Wednesday
Brian: KARATE - Red belt - two more belts to go to black
Scotty: PIANO - Played "Follow the Prophet" for the Primary to sing in Sacrament Meeting
Emily: PRESCHOOL - She loves going to preschool with her best friend, Lily
Midnight: TEARING UP THE BACK YARD - 90 lb. black lab puppy! I have to remind myself that we really do love him!!
Louie: (MAREN'S CHINCHILLA) joined the family in May - he is the more timid one
Lola: (ANNA'S CHINCHILLA) soon to be a mother - we're hoping soon - I actually felt the baby move while I was holding her today!
Kwan: (BRIAN'S SNAKE) very often being held and has tried to escape a number of times
Oreo and Missy: (THE CATS) probably the most played with items in the house - especially during cleaning time!

Ken: Stake Young Men's President, Hood to Coast Run!

Me?
1. I am happy to have my first official meet out of the way. I have recently become certified as a gymnastics meet director and am in charge of the meets for our gym.
2. I am no longer activities chairman in my ward and am loving being involved in music again. It's fun seeing the choir come together, having the youth play the organ on Fast Sundays, and having families and organizations sing when able. We have a very talented ward!
3. I am still teaching boot camp Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 5:30am. I have loved getting to know the women who are crazy enough to come.
4. We are still busy with the garden this year even though the yield has been very poor. I have enjoyed canning pickles, relish, and tomatoes and look forward to doing some more.
5. I am still swapping piano lessons with my friend, Cecily. She teaches two of my children while I teach two of hers.
6. I am the secretary for our Sunridge Homeowner's Association. Luckily we only have a few meetings a year.
7. I am WAY behind on pictures and hope to be able to get going on it while the kids are in school.

I have an incredible family and am grateful daily to have them be a part of my life! That about sums it up (for now).

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
