My Parents' 50th Anniversary

Leanne - thanks for your help. This is what I had printed up as a 5x7.

My parents had their 50th Wedding Anniversary this summer. They had a reception at their home that my brothers and sisters planned. It turned out great! We had different brothers and sisters in charge of different aspects - decorations, food, etc. My sister, Lynda and I were in charge of the program. I should say I assisted my sister with the program. We put together a 45 minutes presentation of our parent's life portrayed as a fairy tale - princes and princesses, kindgoms, crowns, and all. The grandchildren acted as my parents, as their parents, their brothers and sisters, their friends, missionary companions, etc. Those who acted as my parents were supposed to wear the silver crowns (some of them forgot). My sister compiled music from my parents life and also wrote a lot of original music for the program. My kids played the following parts:

Emily: part of the wedding party. Chelsea and Logan were Grandma and Grandpa. Chelsea wore Grandma's wedding dress and Logan sang, "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" to her - just like my dad did at their reception.
Scotty: a young Paul (my brother) with my sister Jean, acting as my mother teaching piano. Scotty played "Mockin' Bird Hill" on the piano, then Krystle (Lynda) played it on the violin, and then the Price family sang it just like we used to as young children.

Brian: a young "Prince Lynn" catching a sucker fish with his sister Faye. (Brian wants to be Prince Lynn for Halloween).
Anna: my dad's siter Faye catching the sucker fish with Prince Lynn in the ditch.

Maren and Jonny: Princess Jeanine and Prince Lynn on the day they met at the office of the registrar at Rick's College. They performed a waltz to the song, "Fascinataion." (It was one of my favorite parts of the program - but I couldn't be biased at all.)

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
