Maren - School Board Recognition

This week Maren was recognized with three other students from the district in front of the Medford School Board. She was nominated from the students of Team 8-3 in her middle school. This is what her English teacher, Mrs. Rouhier said about her:

Hedrick Middle School has chosen a most remarkable young lady for the School Board Student of the Month award. Her name is Maren Lightheart. Maren is a true honors' student. She is always positive, smiling, and a great joy to have in class. She is one of the most conscientious students her teachers have encountered. She currently has a 4.0 grade point average. Not surprisingly, she takes advance classes: Honors English and Algebra; and plays flute in Hedrick's band. At home, she is studying the piano and practices a minimum of two hours a week. But, she's not just a good student. She has a rich life. She runs track for Hedrick, participating in hurdles and long jump. Also, she is part of Hedrick's Rachel Challenge Club which promotes compassion and understanding for all people. This club evolved from the Columbine shootings. she is involved with her Tuesday night youth group at her church and part of its Young Women's Group which strengthens values and builds interpersonal skills for girls 12 through 18. Furthermore, she is a competitive Level & gymnast earning 40 medals and 8 trophies. She has placed 1st "All Around" at the state level. Just this past weekend she competed in the Emerald Team Challenge in Eugene where she placed on floor exercise, balance beam and as all around gymnast. Also, she is one bright cookies because just this past week, she and her poetry partner were the only ones in my honors' English class to get an A on their poetry exam. Maren's teachers are so fortunate to have a student of her caliber. We thank her parents for this opportunity.

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
