Our Spring Break

We had a great spring break. The first few days were spent helping some friends move (watching kids and taking wallpaper down). On Thursday we went to see Wicked. We all loved it. We went with our friends, the Spencers. Jonny and Maren came along, too. It's just incredible to watch a Broadway show at the theater. We're glad we had the opportunity. The other kids stayed with Grandma and cousins in Springfield while we were there.

Maren had her state gymnastics meet on Saturday. She was the only Level 7 there because the rest were competing on Sunday. It was fun seeing the Level 9-10s. The team she was grouped with were so good to her. They cheered her on each time and were very kind. She had her best meet this season: Vault-9.425, Bars-8.825 (the mat slipped out from under her on the landing and made her fall- the coach from the other team said they would hold it, but forgot - so we're counting her score as a 9.325 :), Beam-8.6 (no falls, but she missed her connection between her balk-walkover and back handspring which was a 0.5 deduction), Floor-9.3, All-around-36.15. She had a great time and we were proud of her for choosing to compete on Saturday, even though her scores didn't count toward the team score or for individual events.

School started up again yesterday and we're back in full swing. I'm personally ready for another week of Spring Break or at least summer vacation to start.

Janet, glad to hear you had a fun filled spring break! Great job Maren on her meet :) :). It must have been a great experience to watch the 9-10's? Becca wanted to be there so bad to support our team but we just couldn't make it. Yes things are going well for us but I do miss seeing you guys as well and Bec misses her friends over there too. Sorry to hear about Anna leaving but I totally understand your reasoning. Wow team is dwindling over there isn't it? Enjoy no meets until Jan!!!!! have a good day! Cyndie

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
