Garden, Stake Conference, and Dinner

I went to the garden first thing in the morning to finish planting the peppers and bush beans. Ken and the boys stopped over on their way home from the Father/Son Outing. They had a good time!

Ken had Stake Conference meetings in the afternoon and then I joined him for the adult session. It was a great meeting. I love the Saturday evening session. My favorite talk was Sister Macdonald's. She is the wife of the Mission President. She told a story about a friend she had that she felt really strongly about sharing the gospel with. After many promptings she went to her friend's home not knowing what she would say. Even as she went to the door, she didn't know. Then a very strong thought came to her, "CHOCOLATE CAKE!" She quickly wondered why she was thinking of chocolate cake. Her friend and her husband LOVED chocolate cake and knew the best recipes. She then told her friend that if she had the best recipe ever for chocolate cake that she would want that recipe. She then explained that she needed to share her "chocolate cake" recipe with her because she would always feel bad about not having shared something so wonderful with her. I really loved the analogy. Elder Walker talked about it too. It was a very spiritual enjoyable evening.

I hadn't had much to eat during the day and a group of friends were getting together to have dinner. I thought I had worked out going to dinner with Ken, but we had a bit of a miscommunication and he was not planning on going. Ken really does not enjoy big groups of people, so I suggested we go to eat at Bambu - just the two of us. He was okay with that. We were getting ready to order and the Halls (Brian and Jill) walked in. They went through the same thing. Brian hadn't wanted to go with the big group either. It was a bit comical. We had a good time - lots of laughs! Ken started talking about his claustrophobia, which led to sleep walking, and other funny things. It was a fun night!

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
