Mother's Day Gifts

Mother's Day Gifts:
Ken got me a fish and some frogs to swim around under my plant for my bathroom! It's very fun and very creative. My husband is AMAZING at giving gifts - WAY better than I am. I love that about him. If you make the second picture bigger, you can see the froggy at the bottom.

Maren's gift: Maren gave me a candy flower and a booklet of things she has done over the last few weeks to show me that she appreciates me:
Saturday, April 25, 2009: Today I tried to do my assigned job as quickly and efficiently as I could - And guess what - I was the only one who completely finished my job in time. Thanks for letting me go to the play (with Melissa Cloward). I enjoyed it.
Sunday, April 26, 2009: Today I tried to be more helpful with cleaning. Sorry that I totally messed up dinner. I wasn't thinking. Sorry to say, I was just being grouchy because I didn't want to make meatloaf. Thanks for reading Magyk to us. I love you.
Monday, April 27, 2009: Today I was very busy, seems like you were too. It sounds like you and Anna did awesome work at the pear farm. I love you! You are amazing.
Tuesday, April 28, 2009: Your Anniversary! Dad really loves you. Good idea for his presents. I missed you tonight. I wished I could go with you. I made you a present though.
Thursday, April 30, 2009: Happy Birthday. You are 40. I love how you are still thinking of others, even though it is your day.
Friday, May 1, 2009: Thanks for coming to stay with us (at the sleepover). I know you got barely any sleep. It was really fun though - even though I'm tired. You were amazing doing round off BHS (Back Hand spring).
Sunday, May 3, 2009: Fast Sunday. I fasted for Logan today. I prayed that he wouldn't have very much pain. You and Dad are so dedicated going to the marriage class.
Monday, May 4, 2009: Grandma and Grandpa Jim are here! Thanks for letting me stay at gym longer. Though I should have come and helped!
Tuesday, May 5, 2009 Good job with the painting. It looks really nice, and I can tell that you worked hard on it.

Did you really do a back handspring? You rock! And I loved the notes from Maren--they are a treasure.

My Thoughts on HEALTH and NUTRITION

The above slide show depicts the changes over the past 20 years in the percentage of Americans who are obese. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states. In 1985 most of the states had a percentage of <10%.>25%. So why the change? What has brought on this increase in our nation? Here are my thoughts.

1. TECHNOLOGY
The 80s and 90s brought computers and game consoles to the world. Outside work and play have been replaced by many hours in front of the computer and electronic games. This has led to a nation that is much less active than before.

2. DIET FADS
The 80s is characterized by the LOW-FAT diet craze. If you ate things that were LOW-FAT you weren't supposed to "get fat." The food guide pyramid was taught. It focused on eating large amounts of grains (6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice & pasta a day). Other diet fads have been the "low calorie diet" and the "Adkins" or low-carb diets. These diet fads have changed the way people think "healthy" eating should be.

3. EASY/PROCESSED FOODS
Our nation now has a "get it quick and get it now" mentality. Fast food restaurants are abundant and very accessible. The less time it takes to make or get our food, the better.

I feel that the three of these areas combined have led to an increase in obesity in our nation. SO NOW WHAT?
